Financing a new boat? What you need to know

Posted on April 24, 2018

You’ve made the big decision to purchase a boat. You’ve talked to people and visited dealerships. You’ve figured out what you like and don’t like about the various models and manufacturers. You’ve determined your budget. You’ve met with sales staff and negotiated a fair price that you’re comfortable with.  Now the question is, how do you want to pay for your new boat?

Financing vs Paying in Cash - Is It A Good Idea?
Many boat owners don’t realize that there are options besides paying in cash or a check and for many, financing a boat can make good financial sense. Besides the obvious fact that financing a boat and making payments on time can better your credit while you enjoy time on the water, there are also several other reasons why financing a boat can be a great alternative to paying cash.

Let’s start with the opportunity to own your dream now vs later. If you have enough cash on hand now to purchase a boat, financing a portion of the sale may allow you to add some additional upgrades or even look at a nicer model that you couldn’t afford with cash only. Additionally, the entire boating industry has seen costs rise at a greater rate than inflation which means if you’re waiting until you have enough cash on hand, you’re probably paying more in manufacturer costs by waiting than you’d pay in interest costs by purchasing now.

Financing a boat can also allow you to stay more liquid with your money, creating more financial flexibility long term. By financing, you allow yourself to take advantage of other investment opportunities that may lead to a better rate of return than any interest you would pay on the boat. And if your money is already invested, you’re probably receiving a greater return on investment than you would pay in interest.  Keep in mind that unlike cars that rapidly depreciate, a well maintained, premium boat holds it’s value and will sometimes command a resale price 70-80% of the original purchase price years later.  So the risk of being “upside down” when you want to sell it is much more limited.

Another advantage to financing a boat is the ability to package additional items, like storage, service contracts, extended warranties and gear into the monthly payment so you limit any out of pocket expense after the sale. For owners that are on a fixed income, financing is extremely beneficial because you can plan your payments, own your dream boat and not have to worry about the additional costs of owning a boat.

Should I Finance With My Bank or the Dealership?
Unless you have a long standing history with your bank and a direct relationship with a loan officer, or are purchasing a boat from a private seller or other 3rd party, it usually makes more sense to work with your dealership to finance a boat when possible.

A professional, established dealership should have a financial professional on staff to work with you and create the best financing program for you as the customer. Whether you are shopping for the best term, payment or interest rate, financing through your dealership creates a seamless process for your purchase and allows you to get on the water quicker.

A dealership with in-house financing can handle all the leg work of financing a boat and is also compliant with state and federal laws. The dealership puts the privacy of the customer first and should have designated personnel to handle the non-public information. This allows for one company to handle the information which limits the chances of identity theft.

Dealerships also allow you to take advantage of more flexible term/payment options, lower interest rates and incentive programs since they work with multiple lenders and receive better rates based on volume. While a personal loan with a bank may extend the terms out for 5-6 years, dealerships can often offer term lengths from 10, 12, 15 and sometime even 20 years to make your payments fit within your budget. Additionally, most loans written by a dealership will have no penalty for pre-payment, allowing you flexibility and savings.

What interest rate can I expect?
This is probably the most common question to anyone looking at financing a boat. Unfortunately, it’s also the one question that can’t be easily answered. Just like buying a home or car, your payment and interest rate is determined by several factors including credit score, amount being financed, down payment and current interest rates.  Unlike a car or home loan, financing a boat is considered a recreational or luxury loan. These types of loans follow trends similar to housing and cars with interest rates fluctuating on national and local levels, but are generally higher than the average car loan interest rate. There are several great online calculators for determining the average interest rate on a boat based on your specific credit history, loan amount and down payment and expect a dealership with in-house financing to maintain a current list of interest rates that will be competitive to local banks and national lenders.

Why Are New Boats So Expensive?

Posted on April 06, 2018

Every year, customers walk into our showrooms and boat shows and ask the age-old question, “Why are these boats so expensive?” The simple answer to this question is that there are many reasons boats cost as much as they do. The tangible things like materials used, labor costs, research and development, meeting EPA regulations, developing and maintaining solid dealer networks, and shipping costs all add to the price tag of a boat. However, what the question usually boils down to for a customer is “What am I paying for at that price?” or “What am I getting for that amount of money?"

The answers to those questions can be broken down into several specific reasons.

Manufacturing Costs

Let’s start with one of the biggest pieces: Manufacturing and Labor costs. Did you know that the vast majority of boats are still built almost entirely by hand? The entire boat building process is simply something that can’t be easily automated. While progress has been made in automating certain processes, boats are big, bulky and generally produced in quantities too low to justify the expense of automation. Think about the size of a boat. It’s not something that can be easily flipped around or moved from one place to another. A boat is also not easily shipped so hulls can’t be affordably produced in another country and shipped to the US. It must be carefully maneuvered from one station to the next in a huge facility that has to be temperature controlled, properly ventilated, and OSHA certified.

Look at the build process of a typical fiberglass boat, whether it be a runabout, deck boat, fishing boat or ski/wake boat. Manufacturers typically have only 1-2 molds available for production. The gel coat, fiberglass, resin and any other strengtheners are applied to the mold in a series of steps that takes on average 24 hours for the chemical reactions to set and an additional 1-3 days for the hull to fully cure. Additionally, premium manufacturers will add foam for flotation or sound deadening through various patented processes. Costs can be significantly impacted at this level by the materials used, whether it be biaxial or triaxial cloth, wooden or fiberglass stringers, stainless steel vs traditional screws, or additional layers of fiberglass and gel. Add to the material costs the expense of cutting holes (either by hand or robotically), sanding, finishing and assembling the top and bottom molds. With boats, there’s no large-scale presses to stamp the piece out or robots that can precision weld the pieces together. It’s an incredibly labor and material intensive job just to build a hull.

Add to this complex build process all the components necessary to operate a boat safely while still having the performance and comforts that modern boat buyers expect. These include pumps, hoses, wires, horns, switches, gauges, lighting fixtures, premium upholstery, stereos, canvas and the list goes on. All these pieces need to be engineered, assembled and installed to work in an environment that constantly gets wet, is subject to heavy battering by waves and baking in the sun. Even the most basic of boats requires a multitude of materials, labor and ingenuity to deliver a product that is safe and functional.

Now let’s talk about technology. Up until the computer age, a company drew and designed a hull, built it, dropped it in the water, and tested it. If it performed well, they could tweak it by adding, removing and reshaping the hull. They would continue this process until it met their specifications. If it didn’t perform well, they started over from scratch. In the 21st century, new hull designs are developed using sophisticated 3d modeling software and computers that can simulate the stresses and flow of water on a hull. Because of this technology, boats today get on plane quicker, are more stable, get less splash over the bow and can be more purpose focused than ever before.  If you’ve ever seen a wakeboard boat, think of the technology involved to create a wave behind the boat that has enough size and force to push a surfer. Think about an offshore fishing boat that can slice through 4-5 foot waves without throwing the passengers and equipment across the deck and keeping the interior of the boat dry. And that’s just the technology to build the hulls! Now let’s add features like computerized ballast systems or gyroscopes that never existed before. Boats today can have all the technology of your living room plus be able to map the lake bottom, show the tide patterns or allow you to navigate new waterways via satellite. This is technology that is developed for a small percentage of the population and therefore carries a premium price tag.

Power (HP)

Without a doubt, one of the most direct costs to a boat is the engine. Whether you’re looking at a small pontoon, a performance wake boat or an offshore fishing vessel, the amount of Horse Power (HP) you desire will affect the overall cost of the boat. Today’s motors run quieter, have more torque and are more fuel efficient than ever before. EPA standards, environmentalists and consumers have also demanded that new motors be “greener” and produce less emissions than ever before. All these factors increase the value of the engine powering a new boat but also add a measurable cost to the price of any new boat.  Relatively speaking, the motor of any boat will account for approximately 1/3 of the entire boat price and as consumers demand more horsepower while still maintaining their clean waterways, the base price of boats will continue to increase.

The X-Factor

So finally, we’re at what we internally call the X-factor. Economists would consider this the laws of supply and demand. While new manufacturers enter the industry each year, there’s still a limited number of suppliers and top tier builders that can’t meet the demand of boating customers. But, that’s only part of it. The missing piece on why boats have increased in price the way they have is this: It’s Because They Can. Take a second and ask yourself “What’s the value of spending time with my family?” What would you pay to see your daughter’s confidence grow when she first pulls herself out of the water on 2 skis? Going out to dinner at a restaurant that overlooks the water may cost you the same as a monthly payment on a boat that provides the same, if not better view of the water. And with a boat, you can have this view any night of the week. Boating is inherently social and in today’s fast-paced, high tech world consumed by social media, boating is an escape that brings families together, builds meaningful relationships between friends and creates a sense of time away and adventure daily. Comparatively speaking, ask yourself what it would cost to go a vacation every weekend that the weather allows you to be outside. That’s what boating is. It creates value that isn’t easily recognized as a dollar figure. Every day on a boat is a new adventure. Every trip out is a chance to be in nature and discover something new. What’s the price of that? What kind of value does that bring to your life? Because price is what you’re paying, but value and time well spent is what you’re receiving.

This is not your father's pontoon boat

Posted on October 31, 2017

Let’s face it: pontoons haven’t been considered the sexiest of boats. They’re considered purposeful, but not really appealing. The old carpeting would smell because it was wet all the time. The sides dented and took a beating. The motors were small. They sat low to the water and often took waves over the front. The furniture cracked and split and wasn’t meant to last decades. Horsepower limitations meant owners couldn’t pull a tube, skier or wakeboarder. And the cockpit was minimalist at best.

Those were the pontoons of yesterday. Gone are the days of bad ergonomics and minimal number of colors for carpet and panel choices. Today, the furniture is as comfortable as your living room. Deep seating and better materials mean boaters can sit longer without cramping or stiffness. And the surfaces hold up for many years of baking in the sun. Flooring has also been improved. Not only has carpeting been improved, but options now include mildew and stain resistant vinyl and faux teak backed with heavy duty cushion. New designs have been created in decking too – channeling water from swimsuits and towels, out of the boat so water doesn’t pool and rot the floor and furniture.

Today there are more pontoon configurations than ever before. These include rear facing seats, dual his-and-hers captains chairs, wrap-around seating with modular bow filler sections, fishing configurations, convertible sun pads, bar seating, additional tables and more! New configurations even include wash down stations, hoses and fresh water tanks, sinks, changing rooms and refrigerators!

Remember the old cheap plastic tables? On many boats, those are now replaced with Corian counter tops and solid surface tables. Everything about the interior of a pontoon boat today is tremendously improved and different than it was just five or ten years ago. New pontoons have upgraded helms. No longer are drivers using just a steering wheel and throttle. They come with windshields that direct airflow over the driver and include built-in cup holders with LED lighting. Helms also include access to MP3-compatible systems and satellite radio. They have aux power with USB chargers, Power Bimini tops, interior and exterior lighting as well as safety features such as docking lights and horns.

Now let’s talk performance. One of the biggest gripes surrounding pontoon boats is they are big, low and slow. Pontoon boats today are faster, handle better, sit higher in the water and are more efficient than their fiberglass counterparts. New innovations in pontoon design means tubes that are substantially larger and lighter. Old pontoons were mostly 23 inches in diameter. Top pontoon manufacturers now use pontoons that are 25 – 32 inches in diameter. Bigger pontoons mean more buoyancy, which allows the boat to sit higher in the water. Even on rougher lakes or larger waterways, these boats stay safe and dry on deck.

The latest innovation in pontoon boat technology includes triple-toon boats. Instead of two pontoons (sometimes called logs), these new pontoons utilize three pontoons, with the motor mounted on the center tube. These boats perform like high-end fiberglass cruisers, but have many more amenities and a lot more decks space. These new Tri-Toons are the best of all worlds.

Add to that, new pontoons have better styling and visual appeal. This includes powder-coated rails, new fencing colors, safety gates and multiple boarding points. There’s nothing more impressive, though, than throttling up to 45 mph on your new Tri-Toon, and comfortably passing by the ski boats struggling through rougher water. You, sitting high and dry, cutting through the chop with a big outboard purring on the back with your refrigerator holding your drinks and food, your passengers’ hair blowing in the wind. The other boats watch you go by and think ”Wait…what? That’s a pontoon boat?” It happens. It is common.

The Boat House, with 4 Midwest Locations and 3 Florida dealerships is proud to offer Bennington pontoons at our stores in Lake Geneva, Lauderdale Lakes and Lake Country. We also carry premium pontoons from Godfrey including Sweetwater, SanPan and Aqua Patio at all of our Midwest and Florida locations. Stop by to see the latest in pontoon boat design and technology or set up a personal test drive.

Midwest News! April Showers bring May Boating

Posted on April 10, 2017

Spring is here and our service departments are in full swing preparing your boats to go back in the water! New boats are being rigged and service boats are being summerized and prepped for delivery back to our customers.

Don’t forget to call in for your boat to be scheduled. If you have a dock or lift to be installed get on the list ASAP! Once your boat is delivered in the event you notice any damage or concerns please reach out to us within 48 hours of delivery.

Preventative maintenance goes a long way. Here are a few ideas on what you should be servicing on a regular basis:

-Impeller Service: Should be completed on inboards annually per manufacturer recommendations and every 2-3 seasons on outboards.

-Oil & Filter Service: Every 50 hours or once per season.

-Tune ups: Every 3 years or 300 hours, includes distributor cap & rotor, spark plugs, fuel filters, and spark plug wires.

-Prop Repair: Rebuild your prop as needed. Running a dinged/dented prop can lead to additional problems if continued to be used.

Hope to see you on the water soon!

Sincerely, Eric Koehler

The Boat House Named to 2016 Boating Industry Top 100 list

Recognized as one of the top boat dealers in North America

On December 8, at a black tie gala in Orlando, Florida, Boating Industry announced the 2016 Top 100 Dealers. The Top 100 is an annual list of dealerships that are unsurpassed in business operations, professionalism, marketing tactics, customer service and more. The Top 100 is the only independent ranking of boat dealers in North America and has recognized the top dealers every year since 2005.

“From the thousands of dealers in North America – and hundreds of nominations – these 100 dealers are the best of the best,” said Boating Industry Editor in Chief Jonathan Sweet. “These dealers excel not only at the business of selling boats, but also delivering a great customer experience.”

With 7 locations throughout the Midwest and Florida, including their most recent expansion in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, The Boat House has grown to become one of the most successful boat dealerships in the US, ranked nationally as the #1 Hurricane dealership, #1 Moomba dealer, #4 Bennington dealer and #5 Nautique dealer. By providing superior brands and striving to meet customers’ needs on and off the water, The Boat House is honored to be recognized as an elite dealership and looks forward to continued growth and success.

Kevin Code, CEO of The Boat House along with Tom Hansen, President of Florida Operations and Jesse Gaengel, President of Midwest Operations accepted this award on Sunday stating “We would like to thank our entire staff for continually improving our business and relentlessly working to meet our customers’ expectations. We would also like to thank our incredible customers for not only allowing us to be part of their boating experience, but in letting us be part of the memories they make on the water!”
